FUEL FILTER REPLACEMENT PROCESS

On most vehicles with a serviceable fuel filter, many of them are affixed to the frame near the fuel tank or under the hood mounted on the firewall and in the fuel line. In order to complete the process, it is imperative that the key be removed from the ignition and the fuel pump fuse or relay is pulled to ensure the fuel pump does not turn on. From there, using special tools, the filter is removed and replaced. 

Some vehicles with diesel engines have two fuel filters: one is mounted on the frame and the other is located in the engine compartment. The fuel filter in the engine compartment is often referred to as the fuel-water separator. Condensation is constantly formed within fuel tanks, resulting in water in the fuel system. The filters within this system have a canister with a lid that is removed allowing for the filter material to be replaced.
